how long-term should urban planning be? munich’s oktoberfest, the festival of kumbh mela in india (the largest pilgrimage in the world), the burning man festival in nevada, and scores of other major events demonstrate that flexible architectural structures are perennially deployed around the globe to provide temporary or medium-term shelter and amenities, often to enormous crowds. such temporary structures fulfil a range of functional tasks and are used in religious and cultural festivals or can take the shape of military camps, refugee camps, or even temporary mining towns. the exhibition has been conceived based on a long-term study by rahul mehrotra at harvard university’s graduate school of design and felipe vera of the centro de ecologia paisaje y urbanismo in santiago. the show traces a global phenomenon that has become increasingly topical given today’s current climate of mass migration streams. the double life of an »empty« lot in downtown daegu’s 53-1 bukseong-ro
we built this little weekend cottage almost on the day 20 years ago. it was used intensively, 20 summers and 20 winters.
it saw a wood-burning stove been built into itself, it saw heavy hail, it saw warm evenings and nikolaus celebrations.
and now, after these two wonderful decades, it’s owners decided to spend the weekends elsewhere, and returned the leased piece of land.
our little heroe here, the cottage, was dismatled this saturday by three guys in under three hours, and should find itself now on its way to its second life. they say its heading east-south-east, to be re-erected on some meadow on some mound with some view.

der »freizeittreff 103er«, eine freizeiteinrichtung für jugendliche in der perlacher straße 103 in obergiesing, münchen benötigt für seinen mehrzwecksaal einen lagerraum zur parkierung der gerätschaften für nutzungen der jeweilig anderen zwecke. das lagergebäude soll dem bestand nach westen hin zur seite gestellt werden. der kreisjugendring münchen stadt betreibt die im eigentum der landeshauptstadt münchen sich befindende einrichtung.
die bauliche substanz des »103ers« ist ein eingeschossiger freistehender atriumbau quadratischen grundrisses der kantenlänge von 23,50 m, eine teilunterkellerte stahlbetonskelettkonstruktion (bj. 1964) auf einem großzügigen mit überaus beeindruckenden walnussbäumen (juglans regia) überstandenem grundstück. die nachbarbebauung besteht im wesentlichen aus mehrgeschossigem sozialem wohnungsbau.
the »freizeittreff 103er«, a recreational facility for youth in the perlacher street 103 in obergiesing, münchen, for its multi-purpose hall needs a stockroom for parking of equipment used for non-actual purposes. the stockroom was to be placed to its western side. the kreisjugendring münchen city operates the facility, a property of the city of münchen.
substance of the »103er« is square single-storey freestanding atrium-building of an edge length of 23,50 m with partial basement in skeleton construction from reinforced concrete (built in 1964) situated on a generous plot, hosting impressive walnut trees (juglans regia). the neighboring buildings consist essentially of multi-storey social housing.
